Through the story Emily was pitied by the town people for not having a real relationship with anyone for years. But didn’t she had the the chances to marry when she was young, she actually did but her father didn’t approve any of the candidates. Because, to him his family was too good for the ordinary people of the town. After her father’s death maybe she did have the chance to marry someone but we all now that she didn’t take it(except the Homer issue which we are not totally informed about). So what we actually can come up with Emily is that maybe she preferd loneliness over a life spent with someone else.
